Through a series of interactive workshops, young people from Logan, Queensland have gathered to share their experiences of community projects and to formulate their views about engaging with government. The participants hail from four community development projects within the Logan region, namely:

  • Making Places – a future directions community art project funded through the Queensland Government’s Community Renewal program and implemented within the curriculum of four high schools where students received insight into urban design and local planning processes.
  • Playgroup project – developed and operated by Loganlea State High School students, ‘The Munchkins’ is a formally accredited playgroup centre.
  • Riding for the Disabled – a partnership project between students and the Riding for the Disabled Association in which students learn animal husbandry and horse riding skills in return for their hands on assistance with maintaining the animals and facilities at the centre.
  • Random Outburst Youth Radio – a youth radio program (which includes a training and mentoring component), an initiative of the Queensland Government’s Community Renewal program.

The presentation unfolds as a multi-media story about how young people have actively engaged members of their community through:

  • rubbing shoulders with local business owners while participating in neighbourhood street-scaping;
  • actively lobbying local government for more youth friendly activities;
  • articulating their design views to local planners about public art;
  • interviewing community members and doing live broadcasts;
  • leaving their creative mark through public art works across the region; and
  • engaging with their local high school for a more parent friendly school curriculum.
