3. Department of Housing Community Renewal Program, Deception Bay, Queensland, Australia
This presentation shares the stories of the Under 5s Read to Me project of Leichhardt and the Lifelong Learning projects in Deception Bay and Caboolture in Queensland. These projects have a common theme of lifelong learning and demonstrate the success that flows from local people working together to encourage people of all ages to read, learn, communicate and share in a community context.
These projects have been facilitated through the Community Renewal program, a Queensland Government partnership with people living and working is selected neighbourhoods across the state. While targeted renewal neighbourhoods experience high levels of economic and social stress, these stories illustrate the commitment and initiative that local leaders and residents have given to lift the spirit and skills of people in their communities.
The presentation provides a brief overview of the history, key participants, activities and learnings of the projects, followed by a summary of the shared lessons across these projects.
The impact that these projects have had on individuals and families, and in turn on the community as a whole, will be shared by workers directly involved in the delivery of the projects.
